I’m new to AE so forgive me for my lack of knowledge. I’ve been trying to add 3D text in one of my shots but I keep getting »Analysis solve failed». I am trying to add the effect in this single shot I have cut out of the original clip instead of adding the whole video in AE and trimming. Please let me know if I’m wrong for doing this. The shot I want to use is 3840×2160, 0;00;01;17, 29.97 fps. It’s a well lit empty room with one person walking passed the camera as the camera slightly pans to the side following the guy. My hope is to get the 3D text to appear on the wall as he passes the camera. Any help!

Not all shots can be camera-tracked. There needs to be a lot of detail in a lot of fixed geometry in the shot. Fixed geometry means things that don’t move. If it is just a camera pan, then you will not get any usable depth information.

For the kind of a shot you describe, the best tool by far is Mocha AE. Run a corner pin track, then use that to position a pre-composed text layer. This link will take you to just about everything you need to know about using Mocha AE.

In the future, please embed screenshots of your UI with the modified properties of the problem layer showing. Select the problem layer, press ‘uu’ and take a screenshot of the whole thing, then embed it* so we can see what you are dealing with.

sadly doesn’t help me, since I used 3D camera on the clip before, precomposed it and put 3D camera on it, boom it failed. I know it works since I literally did that yesterday too on another video.

3D Camera Tracker Fails To Solve Camera

One of the most common problems that people encounter is that the 3D Camera Tracker ‘just does not work’. You import a piece of footage, throw the 3D Camera Tracker onto the clip and then you get the following error message:

There are 2 likely reasons for why that is happening!

The Camera Movement is too fast

Have a look at the following image sequence, taken from my After Effects building destruction tutorial .

During the explosion, the cameraman dives for cover behind the concrete barrier and the camera’s movement is all over the place. Notice that the individual frames of the footage are extremely blurry and there are no features, no distinguishable shapes for the tracker to lock on to. Even if an accidental feature was found, the camera’s movement is so fast that the feature jumps around the screen, making it impossible for the 3D Camera Tracker to follow its movement.

If your footage includes very fast camera movement with blurry frames and undefined shapes, the 3D Camera Tracker will simply not be able to follow the movement of any features and therefore fail to analyse your footage. If it manages to analyse the footage and produce a cloud of 2D track points it might still fail to solve the camera if there are not enough 2D track points to infer the 3D camera movement from.

In this situation your only option is to re-shoot the scene or work around it. I ended up tracking the first half and the second half of my building destruction video separately because I could not track the middle part where the camera’s movement was too fast.

Moving Foreground Elements

Even if you footage is nice and crisp and there is no fast camera movement, elements in the foreground can interfere with its operation.

You will get the best results when you have no moving objects at all in your scene. That way the 3D Camera Tracker will not track the movement of any moving objects in your scene thinking that they are fixed features. If you have a scene with a large moving foreground element, it can easily invalidate your tracking data. Here is a screenshot of my fireworks tutorial:

The 3D Camera Tracker will pick up my movement and think it’s tracking the movement of a static element in your scene, a feature. To avoid this happening, you have to first mask out any large moving foreground elements to remove them from your footage.

Then pre-compose the layer including the masks and apply the 3D Camera Tracker to the resulting layer.

This way you are giving the tracker only the static geometry of your scene to track and it is much more likely to give you a good track.

But alas, even if all goes well with the tracking, there are yet more problems that you might encounter!

I’m trying to use the 3D tracker in After Effects on a video clip of some first-person roller-coaster footage, so I can import it into Maya, add a 3d object, then import it back in AE to add some additional greenscreen footage…but the tracker keeps telling me “Analysis Solved Failed”. I’ve done a couple 3D tracking projects in AE, but for the most part I do 3D Animation in Maya. I’m fairly new to AE, so please be forgiving for may lack of AE knowledge. My guess is that there’s just too much camera movement for it to track.

Being that the 3D tracker wouldn’t work, I wondered if the point tracker could be exported in Maya. So, I tracked the back of one of the seats on the roller coaster, (took a while as I had to manually drag the box in almost every frame). There wasn’t an option to create a Null & Camera at the same time with the point tracking. So, I thought maybe I could parent a camera to the null layer that I parented to the point tracker. It sounded logical to me.

I was actually able to import the single tracker and the camera into Maya, but it definitely didn’t work the way the 3D tracker does. I imported my video onto an image plane connected to the camera imported from AE. The camera seemed to move approporately,  but when I made a  regular poly plane to follow the tracker (for the 3D model shadow matte), it was all over the place. I also tried just importing the tracker without a camera, then tried to create an image plane with a camera within Maya and match it up to the tracker, but that didn’t work either. I just need the 3D tracking info to make it work correctly.

I’m not finding a lot on Google to answer my questions, So I’m hoping someone may have some advice how to track the coaster. I’ve watched several “fix” videos that only told me to cut the moving parts of the video out, or only to track one single frame, which defeats the purpose of trying to track the footage.

I need the 3D tracker just to track a small area on the top of the rear seat, where I will be placing a 3D object. In the video you can see where I put the point tracker on the back seat the back seat where I want some greenscreen footage to follow; that will all be done in AE so I think the point tracker will be ok there. You can see the visible Null object connected to the point tracker in the attached video. Thanks, I appreciate your knowledge and suggestions.

And again, I’m here because I need help, please don’t condemn my lack of knowledge.

I’m using the lated updated After Effects, Maya 2018, and an HP Spectra 360 with Windows 10
