Linux Mint?

Linux Mint?

Linux Mint

So the application you are trying to install has not been updated by the owner to work on Mint 20.x.

Reverting is possible as long as we remember the changes we’ve made.
The problem is that Grub-Customizer for Ubuntu 18.04 does not work, it has no effect on Mint 19.x (although it is equivalent to Ubuntu 18.04).

What changes he makes and where he writes the changes, and why they do not take effect, and if something messes up, I don’t know.

I used Grub-Customizer only to hide entries from the Grub menu without deleting them and to put a background picture on the grub.

As a beginner, there are tons to learn!

You can touch the grub menu. In fact if you keep backing away from changing the look, or the way things work for grub, desktop or anything else for that matter you are not going to learn much. You can add a theme/s to grub to spruce it up and make it look decent, rather than the very plain, boring look that it is when Mint 20 is freshly installed. Mint Tricia actually came with its own grub theme unlike Mint Ulyana, which reverted back to the plain old, boring look.

You just need to know a few basic rules. If you are going to mess with a system file:- a) back it up first, b) If you can’t boot up after making a change to it then boot from your Live Mint USB and reverse that change. c) Learn how to mount your unbootable root partition in Live Mint, so that you can access it to reverse that unfortunate change you made. Lots of good advice out there on YouTube for mounting partitions and copying files.

Changing the grub background to the Mint Tricia theme is easy.
Just place the new desired figure (in «.png» format) in the «/boot/grub/themes/linuxmint/» folder and edit the line «desktop-image:» in the «theme.txt» file to point to the figure desired.

However, only for Ubuntu 20.x (Mint 20.x).
For Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic) it does not work on Mint 19.x.

Fix “Cannot Add PPA” Error in Ubuntu & Linux Mint

Last updated October 29, 2020 By Abhishek Prakash 43 Comments

A regular reader of It’s FOSS, Chetan Jain contacted me today with this question: How can I fix “Cannot add PPA” error in Ubuntu. Chetan was trying to install TLP (power management tool to reduce overheting) and encountered this error:

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:linrunner/tlp
Cannot add PPA: ‘ppa:linrunner/tlp’.
Please check that the PPA name or format is correct.

If you encounter similar error while adding a PPA in Ubuntu or Linux Mint, don’t worry. It’s one of the (less) common issue with PPA and can be solved easily.

I highly recommend reading this detailed article on what is PPA, why is it used, how it works. This will give you a better understanding of PPA.

Fix Cannot add PPA error in Ubuntu and Linux Mint

PPA Error Ubuntu

There can be mainly two reasons behind this kind of error. Either the CA certificates on your system are broken or there is a proxy set up in your network.

Let’s first try to reinstall the CA certificates:

If the above command doesn’t work, perhaps there is proxy settings involved. To pass proxy settings to sudo, use it with E option in the following manner:

This will get the PPA working. Chetan’s issue was solved with the second solution. I hope this quick tip help you as well to get rid of the PPA error. Any questions or suggestions are always welcomed.

Like what you read? Please share it with others.

Fix Linux mint 20 – Cannot add PPA: ”This PPA does not support focal”.

If you are adding PPA repo in Linux mint 20.02 and getting an error Cannot add PPA: ”This PPA does not support focal”. Then follow the simple command given in the article that will solve this error.

PPA stands for “Personal Package Archive” offered by developers and package maintainers on a service called Launchpad. The developers can upload Debian source packages into a PPA that is used by Launchpad automatically to build binary packages for different architectures and Ubuntu versions that can be used on Linux Mint as well.

It helps beginners to installing various programs in an easy way without compiling them manually from the source code that is not included in the official package sources or only in an older version.

However, we should always keep in mind that a PPA is basically an external source and can endanger the system’s stability. Therefore, the packages available to install in the official repository should always be preferred over PPA. Moreover, even if you need to add PPA, you should check the launchpad page for the respective PPA in order to check what the PPA is for and how it is maintained.

A PPA can also have other PPAs as dependencies. However, this cannot (yet) be resolved by the package management and can only be found on the PPA site.

PPA not supported on Focal Linux mint

Fix Cannot add PPA: ”This PPA does not support focal”

Open command terminal

Run the command terminal app on your Linux Mint or Ubuntu and use the system update command to refresh the system repo cache.

Reinstall the CA certificates

After the above steps run the below command that will reinstall the “CA certificates” because it could be broken and creating this error and stopping us from adding “PPA” Repos on Ubuntu or Linux Mint.

Reinstall CA certificates

Add PPA Repo on Linux Mint

Now, we can ad the PPA repo without error.

Instal PPA on Linux Mint 20

In case you are using a proxy server then use the E option after sudo to add the PPA repo. For example:

Let’s you want to add GIMP ppa, then the above command will be like this

sudo -E add-apt-repository ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/gim

Ubuntu Linux 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa)

The base for Mint 20.x

So the application you are trying to install has not been updated by the owner to work on Mint 20.x.

However, as the application you are trying to install is Grub-Customizer then many experienced hands on this forum would probably say that you have had a lucky escape!! :D

If you want to alter Grub then do it the safe way….

Observation:
Grub-Customizer was designed for Ubuntu.
There is no, and never has been, a Linux Mint version.
Until Mint 18.x it worked satisfactorily.
In Mint 19.x, he doesn’t like “grub2-theme-mint”.
It shows entries for Ubuntu in the Grub menu and not for Mint.
The changes made by Grub-Customizer, in the Grub menu, have no effect.
If using the latest version for Ubuntu 18.04 on Mint 19.x or 20.x, do so at your own risk.

A very good synopsis, but it’s far worse than that, Ricardo. Its changes cannot be reversed but it lulls the user into a false sense of security by backing up the original GrUB configuration, which is the bit that can’t be reversed. It doesn’t work.

Changing the grub background to the Mint Tricia theme is easy.
Just place the new desired figure (in “.png” format) in the “/boot/grub/themes/linuxmint/” folder and edit the line “desktop-image:” in the “theme.txt” file to point to the figure desired.

Hi, grub-customiser is directly in repository:
apt search grub-customizer

p grub-customizer – GUI to configure GRUB2 and BURG

To install it, remove first the old ppa :
sudo add-apt-repository –remove ppa:danielrichter2007/grub-customizer
sudo apt update

then :
sudo apt install grub-customizer

I got the same notification with noobslab. Anyone know of a work around for this? Maybe Linux Mint should check on this bug!

It’s not a bug and it’s not in Mint. It means that the PPA owner has not yet updated the software that the PPA offers to work with the Focal version of Ubuntu, or its derivatives.

Im trying to install anbox on Linuxmint 20 Cinnamon.

When I attempt to add repository for kernel modules I get the following error:

~$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:morphis/anbox-support
Cannot add PPA: ''This PPA does not support focal''

What is the issue and is there a workaround? Thanks!

@stevennyman

On Ubuntu 19.10, 20.04 and newer the modules are included with the kernel. Since Linux Mint 20 Cinnamon is based on Ubuntu 20.04, I would assume the modules are pre-installed, and the repository is not necessary. If Anbox has problems running, you can try using some of these steps to troubleshoot them: #1517 (comment)

This changed nothing for me and I am still having the same issues. I have no idea what to do.

@Fuseteam

When I try to modprobe ashmem and binder, ashmem says it exists but binder doesn’t and I can’t find it anywhere on my system, is this normal?

@hs4842

I’m running LM 20.3 w/ 5.16.15-051615-generic kernel. Some kernels have it, most don’t. Anbox hasn’t been updated to contend with this.–On 3/20/22, 12:03 AM Golden Boy 9000 ***@***.***> wrote:

@Fuseteam

@GoldenAJF @hs4842 you can check if binder “exists” by running grep binder /proc/filesystems
unless mint is doing it’s own special thing you should get the following output

it has been part of the debian and ubuntu kernel since 2019
