Try turning down your graphic settings, this worked for me
Modify the heapsize command to allocate 50% of the RAM you have in your computer (NOT video card memory!) in bytes.
Formula = RAM (in GB) * 1024 * 1024 / 2
1GB -heapsize 524288
2GB -heapsize 1048576
3GB+ -heapsize 1572864
Since TF2 is a 32-bit application it is believed to be capped at a maximum of 3GB of RAM. Setting heapsize to a value beyond this may crash the game.

The problem has been going on for me all year. Its really lame. I’m on new Mac Pro with a very capable video card. I think I’ve got 6GB VRAM. I doubt I’m really out of memory. Valve, please address this asap. It has been going on for months and seems to be a well known issue!
TF2 is my all time favorite game and like others here, I have more than 700 hours on it. I’m a true believer, but his crash bug is killing me slowly.

Guys I got the solution. What I did was to delete the game, go to the tf2 folder in steam, go inside the folder, delete everything. Then reinstall tf2. Once done verify the cache. Once I finished, it was fixed. Hope it fixes for you guys too!
Hi, sorry this question is a year and a half later, but I’m having the same issue. Where do you find the folder for TF2 in Steam?

Steam>steamapps>common>Team Fortress 2
try Launch Options
-autoconfig — Restores video and performance settings to default for the current hardware detected. Ignores settings inside any .cfg files until this parameter is removed.

This guide is basically the guide version of This Thread
When the thread gets an update, so will this guide
thank you guys for contributing to it, and with it, we’re able to help more and more people
i will update it ASAP when i get a new fix that i can put here
Tip : Press CTRL + F to make finding the fix your looking for easier
Be Sure To Rate And Fav! :3
Also, whilst your here, have some music to hear
https://youtu.be/664nxe7JuXU
the list is very outdated
you need atleast 4 GB of ram and a decent CPU and GPU to get good fps in this highly unoptimized piece of crap of a game
and select «previous version»
This is currently (as of now, 17/12/17) a bug on Valve’s end.
The fix for this is to log-out from steam, and logging back in.
It’s advised to Not play any parties for now due to this
3/28/18 Type tf_party_leave in your console.
/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/downloading and delete the hl2_osx in there.
(This might not work, the directory might be incorrect).
The problem is Transparent Viewmodels, Either turn them off or delete your HUD Files.
Launch steam as administrator
not many fixes about this, most likely because tf2 isn’t really meant for macs
You might have a corrupted or damaged vpk that contains those particles, that or you probably had them overwritten by someone, I suggest verifying your game cache and looking into what mods you have installed.
This is a rare issue that appears to affect systems with memory pools lower than the standard, it’s recommended to play TF2 with at least 4GB of RAM available
This is mainly down to a memory allocation issue, overtime, TF2 consumes memory and eventually becomes more unstable, in order to prolong the life of your client, try to lower your graphics settings along with deleting temp files within your TF folder.
This is basically due to either a conflicting mod that you have installed OR that one of the models in the games main files has become corrupted, it is recommended to verify your game cache in order to solve it
This is an engine error, which means the only way to fix it is by reinstalling tf2 completely or verify your game cache to check if any «key» files are gone or corrupted.
And if that doesn’t work, then you’re (basically) screwed, since there is no other fix for this (that i know of)
Either:
- Restart your device
Aka: TF2 isn’t connected to the game coordinator service (valve servers)
Restart your steam and your connection
then find the folder with hl2.exe
Delete that folder, and restart steam
Replace * with your monitor width
Replace ** with your monitor height
Expect some crashes since anything added is considered «new» and would be «unstable» at that time, just wait for a fix
Restart steam and your connection
Item server is temporarily unavaible, this can’t be fixed and you just need to wait till the servers are back up
Simply do alt+tab to go to steam then go back. This fixes most keyboard problems.
If not, press ESC and the navigate your way to the options menu, and click on «Reset to Default» or «Default Settings» and you should be good to go.
Options > Keyboard.
Are your keys unbinded? Did someone tell you to unbindall? Well you just got rick roll’d. Try resetting to your default settings.
Again, this is happening due to a crash. Open task manager or alt+tab your way outta there.
Disable discord overlay
Adjust your resolution and turn v-sync on
mostly you should just need -windowed -noborder
Here’s some common fixes
- Try switching between mat_phong 0 and 1
Reduce your graphic settings (in-game settings>video>advanced settings. note: make sure you adjust them outside of a game)
Reduce your resolution and/or resolution (in-game settings>video)
(FOR LAPTOPS) Adjust your power management controls to be set on «high performance». Note: it’s best to keep your laptop plugged in while doing this since this drains your battery pretty quickly
(If you’re stuck in lvl 8, put -dxlevel 91 to go the good version :D)
Heres some good ones:
- CowManglia’s fps guide [www.teamfortress.tv]
- Chris’s tf2 config [chrisdown.name] (outdated but will still (hopefuly) work) (outdated and will no longer work properly)
Credit goes to this thread.
First, look up whatever antivirus you use on the internet.Look up how to block the antivirus from scanning certain files you choose. Then, locate that place in your antivirus and block the following directory:
- Check for and/or stop/pause any active downloads in your device and/or in any other devices that is connected to your network
Use a wired connection if possible
Set steam to pause all downloads while ingame
Try restarting your conection and/or modem/router
Check the location of the server that you’re playing on to see if the lag is because of the distance between your device and the server
This is either because of the TF2 Steam API being down or because the settings on you’re account doesn’t allow you to trade (Note: if you’re a f2p in tf2 you cannot trade)
If you have fps problems with gun mettle skins, there are two options. Either turn them off entirely with directx 81 or set mat_picmip to -1.
you can lower your graphical settings too if you have an Intel IGPU
- right click
- press graphical properties
- 3D
- Set MSAA and CMAA to disable, power to maximum performance etc you know what to do
No Hats mod (Some people said this mod doesn’t increase Fps. but i’m not sure)
Oldschool pack (Makes your graphics like Nintendo 64)
Clean TF2 (I’m not sure if this can increase your FPS, but makes the textures flat. Also, this mod can be use as a cheat in Slender Fortress server)
DanPixed’s MaxFPS (Makes your graphics look more pixelated)
This has something to do with FPS, but it doesn’t matter if you have a better laptop or a better computer. I’m doing the Aspect Ratio, so i don’t list the resolutions but they’re together inside them.
4:3 Low Fov, Highest FPS
16:10 Middleground for both
16:9 High Fov, Lowest FPS
Well, Huds doesn’t do with FPS, but there’s one that has to do with FPS.
My answer is: Ray’s Hud
Problem: whitescreen with directx 8
Solution: you have the transparent viewmodels mod. Remove the mod from your custom folder, directory being «C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonTeam Fortress 2tfcustom».
Not really common questions but :
I can’t see my weapon skins ? Help! :
Switch to Dx9
Some hats have flame textures in them , why is this ?
Again , switch to Dx9
Help! Australium weapons looks like they’re covered in cheese!
mat_phong 0 , removes the greyish shine on your character , but it also makes australium look completely gold , there’s a fix pack but I don’t think it’s updated
http://gamebanana.com/skins/138140
If you want to reduce more graphics, then I’ll tell you.
http://www.abload.de/image.php?img=neuebitmap2kk9s.png
1. Open NvidiaInspector.exe
2. Click the Settings button (middle-right) next to Driver-Version
3. Select Team Fortress 2 in the top left corner
4. Set Texture Filtering – LOD-Bias to 10 or 15 (higher means worse textures)
5. hit “Apply” in the top right corner.
NOTICE: YOU NEED TO HAVE A NVIDIA GRAPHIC CARD
Problem: Casual mode buttons not working
Solution: You have a outdated hud, remove the hud with the directory being,
«C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonTeam Fortress 2tfcustom»

Tf2 Engine Error
I’ve been playing Team Fortress 2 for a couple of years now. As usual I wanted to play tf2. Then my screen froze then crashed. I first thought it was a daily crash for me which goes by once in a while. But when I restarted it, it crashed again. I restarted multiple times wondering what was going on. Then for the 7th time, a mess popped out. It read, ” -ENGINE ERROR- Could not load library client. Try restarting. If that doesn’t work, verify the cache.” I was very confused. I tried to fix files, nothing. I tried to restart steam, nothing. I even verified the cache, still nothing. I don’t know what to do anymore. I really miss playing tf2. If anybody knows how to fix please reply. Have a good day everyone.

This subreddit is dedicated to Team Fortress 2, created by Valve Corporation in 2007. After nine years in development, hopefully it was worth the wait.
