Where are Nikon lens serial numbers located on older AF lenses?
Mar 12, 2013
I recently bought an 80-200 Nikkor AF, a 20mm 2.8, a 24mm 2.8, and a 35mm 2.0 and am having difficulty finding serial numbers. The lenses are probalby 10-15 years old but are all AF and in good shape. I wanted to insure all my equipment but have not been able to find serial numbers on these old lenses. Does anyone know where they are located?

Re: Where are Nikon lens serial numbers located on older AF lenses?
There were no serial numbers on the Nikon lenses I bought some 20 years ago. The numbers were included with the attached warranty forms. They were also printed on the lens box.
Serial number on AF 80-200, 2.8, Nikkor lens
180 degrees from 2.8, not white filled.

Re: Serial number on AF 80-200, 2.8, Nikkor lens
Oh, you’re right. When I carefully inspected my old lenses, I was able to see very crabbed numbers on the opposite side of the aperture numbers (the aperture ring).

My 180 & 35 are on the aperture ring and very hard to see.

I believe you are mistaken. I’ve had dozens of Nikkors over thirty years, and every lens had a number on it. Often, they’re laser engraved, and they’re nearly invisible in some light.

Nikon varies the locations of the lens serial number over the years
The early manual AIS lenses have their SN engraved and white filled at the front end of the lens or the front of the zoom ring. Latter lenses have their SN number shadowed engraved on the aperture ring. Latest G lenses have their SN engraved in opposite side of the distance window (bottom of the lens) under the nameplate – near or under the words Made In Japan/China/Thailand etc. Look for it in good light, it is sometime extremely faint

As Cerumen mentioned I believe all Nikon lenses have serial numbers. I have 3 out the 4 lenses the OP mentioned and they all have numbers on the bottom in very fine text.

I have located the almost invisible numbers. I guess my old eyes are giving out. I knew in my heart they had to be somewhere. Glad I’m not the only one who had trouble finding them.

On the 18-200 look at the lens mount end of the lens. As I remember it will be on the bottom side as the lens is mounted to a camera. It is often very hard to see.

Mine is lightly stamped into the lens barrel, between the zoom and focus rings, just opposite the aperture window. (Just above the Nikon / Made in Thailand / DX SWM VR ED IF Aspherical 072)

Should be engraved on the lower edge of the aperture ring below the Made In Japan text . . . very small and difficult to read . . . but should be there.

1) Серийный номер (8-значный) собственно оптического блока Carl Zeiss. On указан на переднем торце объектива и вложенном в коробку сертификате испекции качества Carl Zeiss. При обращениях в Sony не используется;
Canon 100/2.8L IS USM
U = Utsunomiya, Japan
F = Fukushima, Japan
O = Oita, Japan
