Instructions
To balance a chemical equation, enter an equation of a chemical reaction and press the Balance button. The balanced equation will appear above.
- Use uppercase for the first character in the element and lowercase for the second character. Examples: Fe, Au, Co, Br, C, O, N, F.
- Ionic charges are not yet supported and will be ignored.
- Replace immutable groups in compounds to avoid ambiguity. For example, C6H5C2H5 + O2 = C6H5OH + CO2 + H2O will not be balanced, but XC2H5 + O2 = XOH + CO2 + H2O will.
- Compound states [like (s) (aq) or (g)] are not required.
- You can use parenthesis () or brackets [].
Examples
- KOH + H3Po4 + H2O = K3Po4*7H2O
- KOH + H3Po4 = K2(HPo4) + H2O
- Ni(NCS)2 + PPH3 = Ni(NCS)2(PPH3)2
- K3P + NaMnO4 + NaOH = Na2MnO4 + H2O + K3(PO4)
- CrBr3 + NH3 + H2O = Cr(OH)3 + NH4Br
- CH3CHClCH3 + KCN = KCl + CH3CH(CN)CH3
- CuSO4 + Al + NaCl = Al2(SO4)3 + Na2O4S + CuCl
- H2S + (CH3COO)3Al + H2O = CH3COOH + H2S + Al(OH)3
- ZnSO + NaOH = ZnOH + NaSO
- C2H4O2 + CuOH2 = H2O + Cu(CH3COOH)2
- Br + Na2SO4 = NaBr + SO4
- ZnSO4 + CuCl2 = CuCl2 + ZnSO4

How To Balance KOH + H3Po4 = K3Po4 + H2O
Balance the equation KOH + H3Po4 = K3Po4 + H2O using the algebraic method or linear algebra with steps.
-
Label Each Compound With a Variable
Label each compound (reactant or product) in the equation with a variable to represent the unknown coefficients.
a KOH + b H3Po4 = c K3Po4 + d H2O
-
Create a System of Equations
Create an equation for each element (K, O, H, Po) where each term represents the number of atoms of the element in each reactant or product.
K: 1a + 0b = 3c + 0d O: 1a + 0b = 0c + 1d H: 1a + 3b = 0c + 2d Po: 0a + 4b = 4c + 0d
-
Solve For All Variables
Use substitution, Gaussian elimination, or a calculator to solve for each variable.
- 1a – 3c = 0
- 1a – 1d = 0
- 1a + 3b – 2d = 0
- 4b – 4c = 0
Use your graphing calculator’s rref() function (or an online rref calculator) to convert the following matrix into reduced row-echelon-form:
[ 1 0 -3 0 0] [ 1 0 0 -1 0] [ 1 3 0 -2 0] [ 0 4 -4 0 0]
The resulting matrix can be used to determine the coefficients. In the case of a single solution, the last column of the matrix will contain the coefficients.
Simplify the result to get the lowest, whole integer values.
- a = 3 (KOH)
- b = 1 (H3Po4)
- c = 1 (K3Po4)
- d = 3 (H2O)
-
Substitute Coefficients and Verify Result
Count the number of atoms of each element on each side of the equation and verify that all elements and electrons (if there are charges/ions) are balanced.
3 KOH + H3Po4 = K3Po4 + 3 H2O
Reactants Products K 3 3 ✔️ O 3 3 ✔️ H 6 6 ✔️ Po 4 4 ✔️ Since there is an equal number of each element in the reactants and products of 3KOH + H3Po4 = K3Po4 + 3H2O, the equation is balanced.
Balance KOH + H3Po4 = K3Po4 + H2O by inspection or trial and error with steps.
The law of conservation of mass says that matter cannot be created or destroyed, which means there must be the same number atoms at the end of a chemical reaction as at the beginning. To balance a chemical equation, every element must have the same number of atoms on each side of the equation.
1. Count the number of each element on the left and right hand sides
Reactants (Left Hand Side) | Products (Right Hand Side) | ||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Reactants | Products | ||||||
KOH | H3Po4 | Total | K3Po4 | H2O | Total | ||
K | 1 | 1 | 3 | 3 | ❌ | ||
O | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 | ✔️ | ||
H | 1 | 3 | 4 | 2 | 2 | ❌ | |
Po | 4 | 4 | 4 | 4 | ✔️ |
2. Multiply coefficients for compounds to balance out each element
-
K is not balanced. Add 2 molecule(s) of KOH to the reactant (left-hand) side to balance Potassium: 3KOH + H3Po4 = K3Po4 + H2O
Reactants Products K 3 3 ✔️ O 3 1 ❌ H 6 2 ❌ Po 4 4 ✔️ -
O is not balanced. Add 2 molecule(s) of H2O to the product (right-hand) side to balance Oxygen: 3KOH + H3Po4 = K3Po4 + 3H2O
Reactants Products K 3 3 ✔️ O 3 3 ✔️ H 6 6 ✔️ Po 4 4 ✔️
3. Verify that the equation is balanced
Since there are an equal number of atoms of each element on both sides, the equation is balanced.
3KOH + H3Po4 = K3Po4 + 3H2O
2 KOH (aq) + H3PO4 (aq) → K2HPO4 (aq) + 2 H2O (l)
