Hi, I know that at people on normal computers which run without problems other games (including online) – comes out of the game to the main menu with the error “CLIENT TIMED OUT”. Unfortunately, because of the unprofessional, irresponsible developer – the bug is still not eliminated, even though hundreds of complaints and reports, both on the game forum / Steam’a, and in googl’e (and because they unprofessional *****) . On the purposes pursued by Valve, we can only guess.
Because, unfortunately, I am one of those people who have this problem occurs from time to time, I decided to write about the found “solutions” to this problem, so how Valve still advises a nonsense (such as rebooting the router), and does not explain – why with other online shooters (at times demanding to the resources and better than l4d2) no problems occur. I do not know any working of them 100% of cases, and work in general or not. The fact is that after I found his version – the game has become in a few months again was broken. But try – suddenly get (fixes from Valve can not be expected).
Solutions can be used either together or individually. But better to individually (the clearer what decision is right for you):
1. Remove the game, delete its folder from the folder – “Steam steamapps common”. Run the software that removes the debris / cleans the registry (look for something on Wikipedia). Install the game again. Make sure that before you start Steam you have enabled Service “Steam Client Service” it is necessary for the proper launch of “registration” of the game and its updates;
2. Delete the file – «ClientRegistry.blob» in directory Steam;
3. Logout”login” in the Steam and re-enter;
4. Run Steam, go to Settings, select the “Cloud” – there is remove all the checkboxes, accept change, leave and restart Steam;
5. Go to your “Library”, right-click on the game and select “properties.” Locate and turn off the “Steam Cloud” and restart Steam;
6. Start the game, go to Settings, locate and disable the “Steam Cloud” and restart game;
7. Click the “Library”, right-click on the game and select “properties.” Click the startup parameters write there (at first just one thing, if not help all together) without quotation marks::
1) “-dxlevel 95”
2) “+ HostPort 27005”
3) “+ clientport 270xx” (вместо xx число от 01 до 19)
8. Pressing ~ (console) in-game and typing: cl_timeout “99999” ;
9. Start the game, open the Task Manager, and install high priority for left4dead2.exe;
10. Start Steam, open the Task Manager, and install high priority for Steam.exe;
11. Remove all the modifications (you can add to favorites so as not to forget them);
12. The worst way – to launch Steam as administrator (but for some reason, the most effective, according to google);
13. cl_forcepreload “1” // default 0; Pre-load levels entirely into RAM (only use if you have 2GB of RAM or more)// This reduces in-game stuttering, but may make you wait longer to join servers
add that to your autoexec.cfg if you don’t ahve one make one.
14. The most naive – contact support Steam;
15. Buy a different version of the game, or …H͑ͫͥ̈̏̅́̐͒ͮ̊͡͞҉̤͔̹̝̠̭̥̫̺̖͇̜̕͢E̷̱̰̪̩͚̳͕͎͍̟̹̹̜͙̜̜͈͒̏ͬ̄͊ͣ͌̀̚͜ͅͅL̸̽̓̿̑̊ͫ̃̆̈̽̈́̋͋͆́͏͚͚̫̠̻Ṕ͊̐́̏̏͐͒ͤͩ͋̈ͯ̒ͬ̂̔̚҉̵̻̪̳̺̗̟̻̮͓̙̰̗̞̼͙̦͡ͅ ̅͐ͪ͂ͣ̈̎͆͐҉̼͉͎̫̠̰̺̲G̶̡͚͉̥̮̳͇̲̘̫̻͉̭̙̙̥̣̋̽ͯ̽ͩ̔ͬ̈́͞ͅa̶̢͈̲̤̝͕̯̲̮̹̼͔̔̉͌̾̄̐̽̆͘ͅb̵̵̩̜͕̟͙̠͎͔͖̯̭̺͍̖̗ͨͩͭ̿̾̅̐ͥ͟͜ͅe̺͔͕͚͚̫͔̜̠͉̦̳̜̓̾̓͆ͩ̿ͩ̊̿̅͛͠ ̧͖͇̯͈͙̲̻̋ͪ̏̽̔̋ͣ̉̾ͩ̀̈́ͫ̌́́͡i̴̸̛̦̣̜̠̯͎̐ͭ̋͂̿̾̚s̡͎̦͈͉̱̟̻̦̬̗̩̐̂ͩ͒̋ͩͥ̏͒͛̏̚͝ ͧͩ̿̐ͪ̾̓ͫ̎͏̮̪͇̭͡e̶ͮͮ͒̅́͡҉̤̭̣̝̪̦̝̘͕̫͇̬͇͖a̵̴̩̮̞͉͎̻͓͙͓̠̭ͩͭ̉͗̏̅ͪ̓̑͐́̍̈̃́͡t̡͔̳̦̙̭̻̖̱̹͌̍̃̾̃͐ͨ͑̑̑̈́̉ͯ̓́͢͟͠ͅį̶͓͎͎͕̯̉ͩ̒̂͗̽́͞n̨̛̛̬̭͈͍̠̹̫̼̼̥͖͓͍̠̋͒ͯ̌ͩͣ͂͛̈́̑̆͛͗́ͮ̑g̐ͥ̓͒̏͆̈́ͨ̂̉̚͝͏̵̨͖̳̞̰̗̲͔̞͍̗̹͚̹̀ ̢̢͔̪̦̭͔̝̬͉͈̠̬͉̮̔ͫ̅̄ͣ̉̈́̉͢m̬͓͍̱̝̱̱͕͚̲̤͈͓̮̖̼̠̃͌̒͆̉̊͊́̐̒̅̕͢ě̶̵̩̺͍͎̺͇̩̦̺̫͙͎ͬͯͧ̂͌̍̈́̂͑̅ͧ͊ͮ̇̚͞͠,̨̢̢̹̣̬̦̙͇͙̳̪͗ͨͣͬ̀͡ͅ ͭ̓̄̽͌ͬͦ̏̌̈́̊ͮͩ҉͉̱̫̙͈̩͉͙̺̺̳̺̭͎̬͠h̡̛̠͖͚̳̤̥͚̹̼͉̗̮͎͙̮ͨͣ͂̄̃̄͗̆̀̃͞͡e̴̳̳̣̟͙̭̦̗̺̯̙͉̼͖̝̙̞̎͊ͭ̿̑̓͗ͬ͗͋͐̿ͦ͑ͣ̍̀̚͘l̸͙̦̭͎̫͉͔͛ͩ̒͌͑ͩͩͭ̈̀͊͂̕.̴̨̗͈̺̳̲̪̲̥̠̼̜̥̮̦͈̂ͯ̾̾͛̊͠.̢̛͎̘̞͖̳̳̙̩̰̼͊ͩͯ͗̽̂͒̅̓ͦͯ̀͘͠.̢̘̻̗̘̼̣̥̮̟̹̩̊ͦͤͣͦͤ̃̒̀̚ͅ.͔̩̣͔̾̉͛ͫͯ̀ͥ̇͋́̃̉ͫ̆͑̏͞͞ͅ.̢̢̡̛̞̭̞̬̳͕͎͓͕͕ͧ͌ͫ̒̄͐͒̓̉̌́ͩ̈́͑̓̊̆͘.̨̳̦̻̱̗̬͔̱̤͕̪̜̰͕͈̖̻̟ͮͪ̿͐̔̔ͭ̊͆̌̒ͦ͟.͆̇̾̎͌͛͏̵̜͎̲́.̧̩͖̻̖̳͈̳͉̳͉̼̱̝̻͓͈ͩͩ̄̅̋ͣ̽̀̽ͯ̄̃͂̌ͫͣ͞ͅ.̡͆ͪ͂̈́ͯ͆̿̇ͦ̅҉̨͏̠͈̗͔.̴̈̇̊̋̇ͥͭ̄̑̍̐̿̃́̂̌ͫ̀̚͡͏̤̥̖̜̫̘̭̼̯͎͔̖.̷̝͕̖̝̰̘̗͙͚̮̖͎͍̘̩͈̰͂̅͌̎ͦ̐͟͟͞.̴̠̫̬̤̝̙͔ͧ͐͗̑̑͛̊ͩ̍̾͆͋ͦͮ͛̈̃̚͝ͅͅ.̷̡̯̰̩̜̮̦̘̲̻̓͊̎ͯ̍͗̔͊̉̏̎̈͛̚͢͞

Left 4 Dead 2.

I was playing with a friend when this happened to me, he didn’t have any problem.
I can’t play one map of a campaign without being kicked out with this message and after that I can’t join the same game, I’m kicked out again with the same message.
I’ve tried deleting Clientregistry.blob but it doesn’t solve anything.
Am I the only one having this problem?
Does anyone know how to solve it?
Had this issue the other day. A few things I tried to fix it.
1. Disable steam cloud for L4D2. Didn’t work for me but others say it did.
2. Verify integrity of game cache
3. Go to your steam directory and delete the file called ClientRegistry.blob and restart steam.
4.(This one worked for me) While in game, open console and type cl_updaterate 50 Sometimes it’s set at 100. Turning it down to 50 didn’t seem to have any gameplay changes with me. Seemed smooth still. So give these things a try and let me know if they work.
Thank you very much, BoneheaD, I didn’t know how to do the first step you said, so I begun with the second one and this afternoon I played a full campaign.
Before posting here I looked for solutions in google, so I’d already deleted ClientRegistry.blob.
Finally, I didn’t understand the fourth step. How do I open console? I don’t know what «console» is.
key above TAB. If it doesn’t do anything, go into options in game, and enable the developer console. Then hit that key and type in cl_updaterate 50
Let me know if you ever find a fix. I’ve had the same issue since January and not a damn thing anyone has suggested (including Steam) has worked for me.
Out of curiosity, what anti-virus are you running? Last thing Steam suggested to me was to uninstall mine and re-install Steam. That had the same success as deleting clientregistry.blob.
Yeah, I got hit with it the other day, so my solution doesn’t seem to work. I will say that the amount of times it does happen is way less than before. I also noticed that I tend to get it if I’m not hosting the game.
I’m planning to try to get around playing it on my laptop sometime this week until either it gets the error, or I feel enough time went by that I should’ve gotten the error. That’ll at least tell me if the issue is my desktop, an add-on, or somewhere outside of my router.
i just got this about a week ago, came out of nowhere and ive never seen it before after playing almost 250 hours of L4D2.
Tried everything on that list bonehead posted, the only thing that worked was disabling steam cloud, which worked for only a day. It came back again an hour ago, I verified cache and that made it work for about 30 minutes, then it happened again just now, and none of these steps are working anymore.
Im not having problems with any other games besides CSGO, which recently also broke and says that my VAC cant be authenticated in competetive mode. I dunno if they are connected but nothing is fixing this and ive tried everything i can think of.

Left 4 dead 2 client timed out как исправить
-Happens after 10 minutes of being in any game
-After which he can’t join into any game and gets client timed out error, even when trying to start a single player game
-Deleting (not just disabling) all addons didn’t change anything
-Verifying files didn’t change anything
-Ping doesn’t rise before getting the error, network should be just fine. Speed is great. Just suddenly gets the error
Need help for friend. A sourcemod plugin displays his SteamID like this when he tries to join a server after he gets the error the first time
It happens too me also got on a steam server 10min maybe then the same thing client timed out.
this has been happening to me for alomst a week now its so frustrating has anyone figured out as to why this happens all my other games are fine?
Just curious, is your game installed on an encrypted drive?
i’ll ask
somebody proposed adobe reader reinstall for a possible fix but that didn’t work.
also directx reinstall did nothing

A similar issue, yeah. What you’re not going to like is that it’s been plaguing me for the last three years on three different networks. Every now and again this thread comes up, I subscribe hoping there’s a fix, but so far there’s been nothing that worked for me.
I too have this. Here is my elaborate list of what I’ve tried which DOES NOT WORK:
-Verify integrity of game cache (checks clean every time)
-Reinstall the game.
-Disable & delete all addons.
-Change cl_updaterate and cl_cmdrate to values 50 and 60 for both.
-Manually set +clientport and +hostport on valid ranges (yes, valid ranges like 270005 & 27015).
-Ethernet cable straight from PC to router/modem.
-Reboot the computer & router/modem.
-Disable steam cloud sync.
-Run steam/l4d2 as administrator/with high priority.
-Run from an otherwise empty, non-loaded network with 0 other network related processes running anywhere.
-Probably more which I’ve forgotten.
NOTE THE LATTER: This is clearly not a problem with your network or internet connection, it’s a flaw in the game engine’s network functionality. L4D2 uses your PC/localhost as a server when playing single player. How something can ‘time out’ on the 127.0.0.0 network probably has an interesting answer, since it’s all happening on your computer and never leaves the box.
The only thing I haven’t tried yet is reinstalling windows. I’ll let you know if I do, and if that fixes it.
My advice? Find a way to get directly in touch with valve staff (use your imagination), and complain so they can hear you.
This is not abusive, it’s your right as a customer to get in touch with whom you’re doing business with, no matter if it’s a game you bought or a house. They’re not fixing it like they’re supposed to, so make them.
Remember; they are still selling this, even though they _know_ it’s a broken product. That is simply plain ripping off their customers to milk the cow, nothing else.
Don’t just sit and be pissed, let them know. They’re cruising on the presumption that what they’re doing is ok. It just isn’t.

Same here, and still get the issue.

No clue what this is or how to do it.

I had to reinstall my OS about 11 months ago. The first thing I installed after I got Win 10 put back on my PC was L4D2. I ran it to see if I’d still get the CTO bug. I hit it about 15 to 30 minutes into the first game I played. I had been told in the past that the problem could have been my anti-virus but I know now that’s not correct since I didn’t have any anti-virus installed once I had finished a clean install of Win 10.
The most recent thing I did was to set a couple new (to me at least) launch options in the Properties window of L4D2. That seemed to make the problem worse as I was getting booted from every game after about 5 to 10 minutes. I took the first one out and left this one in: «-dxlevel 95»
Yesterday I played a bunch of local server games and it seemed stable. I then joined a friend’s game on a server in Chicago and it seemed stable. Another friend joined that game and we played at least three different maps on that server without me getting the CTO bug. The 2nd friend and I then decided to play one more game with me hosting. As we played a third friend of ours and a friend of his joined. Again, I never got hit with the CTO bug, however my 2nd friend was having connectivity issues despite having his average ping rate with me.
But as you said, the issue is intermittent. I could have just lucked out yesterday and just didn’t encounter the CTO bug.

Left 4 dead 2 client timed out как исправить
I constantly receive the error message «Client timed out» whenever I try to join a game.
This morning (+-13:00 GMT+1) I joined a game via the serverbrowser (official server), played for 2 minutes, then the game crashed.
I start up the game anew, join a versus game which proceeds to load, I’m in the game for roughly 3 seconds, then it boots me to the main menu with the message «Client timed out».
Retried joining multiple games in different modes, both official and third party servers. Same error message.
Did a speedtest, everything is fine (100mbps download, 30mbps upload, 0 ping). Restarted router and PC to no avail.
Deleted clientregistry.blob and restarted steam, issue still persists.
Created userconfig.cfg file in the left4dead>cfg directory with the inputs «-dxlevel 95 +clientport 27010» (as was recommended in the steam forums) to no avail.
Put «+clientport 27001» (as recommended in the steam forums) in the Left 4 Dead 2 launch options, to no avail.
Attempted to exit and relaunch steam, issue still persists.
Unsubscribed/removed all add-ons (and relaunched steam), issue still persists.
Disabled steam cloud for L4D2 and verified integrity of game files, issue still persists
Quick re-install of L4D2, issue still persists.
Full re-install of L4D2, issue still persists.
Lengthy restart of my modem (15 Minute wait) followed by a lengthy restart of Steam (30 Minute wait), issue still persists.
I hope this will help someone in future.
Update, I fixed it! Somehow..
I’ll update the main post with how I fixed it, and will leave this up in case anyone stumbles upon it in future.

I already sent a help ticket to steam support, but knowing how bad they generally are I decided to post here as well.

I have absolutely no idea how to fix this, nor why this even happened in the first place, since the first game of the day was working perfectly fine, and suddenly this error is plaguing me.
The only minor difference that occured for some of the attempted fixes, was that the loading bar took a few seconds to slowly fill up, whereas in other instances it immediately skipped to the end and gave me the error message after maybe 1 or 2 seconds.
Other games and websites work fine (excluding twitch, which is apparently having some issues today)
On an extra note, when uninstalling and re-installing L4D2, I’m unable to create a desktop shortcut, steam tells me there is already a shortcut on my desktop but this is not true, if someone has a fix for that too it’d be appreciated.
I just tried out hosting a local server and playing in singleplayer, and it gives me the «Client timed out» error. This makes less sense by the minute.
Windows 10 OS
Intel Core i5-4460 @3.20GHz
8GB Ram, 2TB External Hard disk, GeForce GTX960.
Fritz!Box 5490, Fiber optic connection, connected via Cable, I am the only user connected right now and the only person on this connection who uses Steam. Provider: Luxembourg Online
If you require any additional information about my PC or network, let me know.
I hope this will help someone in future.

Left 4 dead 2 client timed out как исправить
This error will occur when trying to join a game in any gamemode. It can occur when connecting to a server with a weak connection, but usually this error causes the player to stop connecting to any server in every mode, including singleplayer, with the error message “client timed out”.
If you have this issue, it will keep reoccurring without fail, preventing you from joining any servers.
There are various solutions that have worked for different people, they are as follows:
Exiting and relaunching L4D2 may fix this issue. If not, exiting and restarting steam as a whole may work instead.
Navigate to your steam library, right click on Left 4 Dead 2, select properties and go to local files. Click on Verify integrity of game files…
Steam will check for missing files and re-install them, this can take up to an hour.
Certain add-ons might mess with your game files, so unsubscribing and/or deleting all your add-ons might fix the issue. Restart steam after doing this.
Turn off/unplug your modem for at least 30 seconds, then turn it on/plug it in again and wait for it to reconnect.
If the issue was related to your internet connection, this will most likely fix it.
Exit Steam, then delete the clientregistry.blob file. Following this, relaunch Steam.
It’s noteworthy that not everyone has the clientregistry.blob file. If that’s the case for you, ignore this option.
Add +clientport 27001 in the Left 4 Dead 2 launch options (Steam library > Right click Left 4 Dead 2 > Properties > Launch Options)
Alternatively, create a userconfig.cfg file with the inputs «-dxlevel 95 +clientport 27010» in the following directory:
Steam > Steamapps > Common > Left 4 Dead 2 > left4dead > cfg
Navigate to your steam settings and then to downloads.
(Optional) Change your download region, restart steam, then change it back and restart steam again.
Click on clear download cache.
This will prompt the message «The Steam service component is not working properly on this computer. Reinstalling the Steam service requires administrator privileges».
Click on INSTALL SERVICE and wait (it may keep freezing every time you do this, that is normal and you can leave it be until it responds again by itself.)

This is the most reliable fix, and the one that has worked for most people.
If you know of any other fixes that work, let me know and I will include them in this post.

Numerous shooter games utilize the zombie element but not many prove as successful as the Left 4 Dead series, especially Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2). Featuring addictive gameplay, L4D2 offers excellent replayability which is why its player base remains more than a decade after the initial release. Nonetheless, L4D2 is not perfect and despite being an old tile, it still contains issues that interfere with the enjoyment of players. One of such is the client timed out L4D2 error which prevents players from getting into the game.
Insight Into The Client Timed Out Error
Every time you join an online session in L4D2, all you see is the “Disconnected: Client timed out” message? Then it’s suggested that you spare a bit of your time to check out this article. Down below, you would find all the information that you must know about the client timed out error of Left 4 Dead 2.
A List Of Possibilities
In general, thanks to its outstanding stability, L4D2 is able to run smoothly in most of the cases. However, if the client timed out error keeps giving you a hard time, it’s a good idea to take these suspects into account.
Hiccups
Since it’s a well-designed game, Left 4 Dead 2 rarely bugs out but it still develops hiccups once in a while. When the game acts up, the performance of quite a few features suffers and connection to the game client is not an exception. Hence, if you come across the client timed out L4D2 error out of the blue, you have to give hiccups some thought. On the bright side, there is no need to do much to get rid of hiccups in Left 4 Dead 2.
Corrupted Game Files
To put it plainly, the game files of L4D2 dictate all sorts of operations that make up the gaming experience. If the files stay the way they should be, Left 4 Dead 2 players could play the game with relative ease. On the other hand, if corruption exists in the files, the game would go haywire as a result. Unless you manage to address the corrupted game files, you may have trouble overcoming the client timed out error.
Connection To The Internet
It’s possible to play L4D2 offline but to join an online session, you must have a solid Internet connection. If your connection to the Internet is unstable, a wide range of issues inevitably pop up including the client timed out L4D2 error. You detect drops in the speed of services that require Internet connection on your computer? In that case, it’s highly likely your Internet connection is the one behind the client timed out L4D2 error.
Game Distribution Platforms
For ease of convenience, many players play Left 4 Dead 2 on game distribution platforms (Steam, Epic Game and so on). Compared to playing the standalone version, playing L4D2 on game distribution platforms provides players with various benefits. Still, if game distribution platforms experience issues, games that they host would run into difficulties. Needless to say, once it comes to causes of the client timed out error, more than a few Left 4 Dead 2 players mention game distribution platforms.
Server
If you keep having the client timed out error as you play on a certain server, that server may be at fault. Nowadays, L4D2 players could choose from a multitude of servers to play but several servers receive more attention than the rest. In the case that you play on a poorly maintained server, errors such as client timed out won’t be uncommon. Besides that, the client timed out error even affects well-maintained servers sometimes when there is a flood of players.
What You Could Do
The moment L4D2 players notice the client timed out error, they resort to countless measures with varying degrees of success. Nonetheless, if you wish to play Left 4 Dead 2 online again as soon as possible, try out the following fixes.
Exit, Relaunch And Join Again
Assuming that the client timed out error is the work of hiccups, everything would return to normal the next time you launch the game. Thus, you should exit the game, relaunch it and join again. Usually, with hiccups out of the way, L4D2 is going to have an easy time creating online sessions upon request. That being said, if you see that the client timed out error still lingers, move on to the next measure.
Remove Corruption From Game Files
Unless you have a firm grasp on the L4D2 game files, it’s tough to identify corrupted ones. That is why regarding the removal of corrupted game files, nothing proves as effective and efficient as uninstallation/reinstallation. There is an alternative if you play Left 4 Dead 2 on game distribution platforms though and that is verifying integrity of game files. The verification automatically replaces corrupted game files on your computer with clean ones on the platform servers.
Check Out The Internet Connection
In the beginning, you should ensure that your computer is connected to the Internet. It’s worth pointing out that settings on your computer could get in the way of Internet connection if you mess up their configuration. Aside from that, if the router sustains damages in use, the Internet connection of your computer would be unstable at best. Last but not least, get in touch with the service provider to determine whether there is an outage.
Think About The Game Distribution Platform
Suspect that your game distribution platform is responsible for the client timed out L4D2 error? Then you may want to uninstall and reinstall the platform launcher. Additionally, it’s wise to run the platform launcher as an admin then see how things turn out. Redownloading components of the platform launcher works on a number of cases as well. Let’s say you play Left 4 Dead 2 on Steam, here is what you need to do:
- Step 1: Launch Steam, go to Settings and choose Downloads
- Step 2: Click Clear download cache
- Step 3: When the pop-up message about Steam service appears, click Install Service
- Step 4: Once the installation of Steam Service concludes, launch L4D2 and try joining an online session again
Note: On occasions, it’s necessary to change the download region in advance for the Steam service pop-up message to appear.
Change Server
One way to decide if the server that you choose is the one that causes the client timed out error is to change server. By searching around the Internet, you should be able to locate a host of L4D2 servers and their characteristics. Naturally, it’s best to prioritize servers near you for optimal stability as you play the game. To change to a specific server in Left 4 Dead 2, enable Developer Console then use the command connect server-address in Developer Console to initiate connection.
Is It Possible To Play Left 4 Dead 2 With Mods Online?
You can join an online session in Left 4 Dead 2 with mods but you must remember particular issues. For instance, depending on the mods you use, you need to look for servers with sv_consistency set to 0. Also, if you plan to play on custom maps, your teams have to download the maps as well. Last but not least you should host a local server if you intend to run L4D2 with custom settings.
Does Left 4 Dead 2 Support Cross-Platform Play?
Left 4 Dead 2 only supports cross-platform play between PC and MAC. Hence, if you play on PC and your friends play on Xbox, you all cannot play together.
May I Play Left 4 Dead 2 With A “Potato” Computer?
Since Left 4 Dead 2 is an old game, you would be able to play it on various computers including “potato” ones. However, in the case that your computer struggles to support the game, change the settings to low. By doing so, you could get the game to run at a reasonable pace. You still need a decent connection to the Internet to play L4D2 online though.
