Windows 8, Windows 10 issues “This package can only be run from a bootstrapper”

I have an issue with my new installation package. It cannot be uninstalled in Windows 8 or Windows 10.
It is a exe file with all files in the exe and the only information I get in the log on uninstall is “This package can only be run from a bootstrapper”.

My previous packages worked, but since then I have also updated AI to the latest version.

Hi,

This error may occur if you are using a multilingual package with a display language selection dialog (for multi-language packages) in the Languages Tab. This is a known issue that occurs when your different language installations have different Product Codes.

In order to overcome this, you should use the same Product Code for all of your installation languages. Just, go to “Product Details page -> Product IDs tab and set the same Product Code GUID for all of your installation languages.

If this is not the case, please send us the .AIP (project) to support at advancedinstaller dot com so we can investigate this.

Best regards,
Dan

I ended up figuring out a workaround, this was for a program called Hydraulic Toolbox, and I eventually figured out that you are able to run the program extracted from the setup.exe without any setup at all as long as .NET 3.5 was installed, so I was able to modify my PDQ Deploy install to reflect that, so now there is a step for copying over the folder to the user’s machine, then a step to copy the shortcut to their desktop. Not ideal as it won’t be tracked as a program in PDQ but this is an ancient program from the DOT so I imagine updates will be few and far between.

I am using advanced installer 11.4.1 to make an msi.

I want to run the .msi with msiexec /qn and not the .exe.

Advanced Installer makes 2 files as output (a .exe and a .msi)

When I run the .exe everything works fine.

Client.exe /qn /log "C:mylog.log"

When I run the .msi I get no run and an error in the log

 msiexec /qn /i Client.msi /log "C:mylog.log"

At the end of the .log file it reads..

Installation success or error status: 1603.

The item highlighted in your screenshot is not the correct one to use. The one above it with the blue robot icon is correct. If that doesn’t work, you might try running the installation from the command line with logging enabled. That would tell us what is going wrong. In the install guide is an example of how to do that.

You should not use MSIEXEC. You only need to run the exe as an admin.

Open the Installation folder, right-click on Setup.exe and choose Troubleshoot Compatibility. At the first Program Compatibility Troubleshooter prompt, click on Try recommended settings. Click on Test the program button and see if the setup is opening without the error message.
